Snow Daze

We have had lots of snow lately in Boston, school has been called off four days in the last two weeks and everyone is sick from being cooped up in close quarters. My sister's house has been hit especially hard, last week between the stomach flu  and snow days no one went to school at all. One after the other the kids ,then the adults, got a nasty stomach bug . This week hasn't been much better Monday was a holiday , Tuesday was a snow day and today ,Friday, is another snow day  In two weeks her kids have gone to school twice so they're all off schedule, rambunctious, bored and more than a a little crabby.

If that isn't bad enough Lilah has been up most of the night the last few nights . When I called to check in this morning my sister sounded like she was at the end of her rope . Usually I encourage the kids to be as loud and high spirited as possible (which is why my sister loves to see me pull up) but today I asked the older two to play together quietly for their mom. I think it worked because when I called a few minutes ago my sister sounded much better.

My sister has her hands full with 3 kids Grace, 6,John, 3,and Lilah, 2. They are  easy kids , Lilah has developmental disabilities but she is delightful not whiny or demanding at all, Grace is as good as gold ,driven to please, kind and not at all demanding either. John is more demanding than the girls but still easily redirected and a pretty easy kid all in all. Still, I don't know how she does it all and manages to works 2 days a week too . I give her a hard time  ( cause that's the way I roll) but i think she is an amazing mom. When we talk about Lilah's situation and she says she doesn't understand why her kid had to be born with special needs , I tell her it's because you  guys can do it.

Here's hoping for good weather and good health and a little sleep would be good too!

Lil Peach

I call Lilah "Peach" because of her "Peaches and cream" complexion and because her personality is very peachy, she is just a little doll.

Yesterday I went to see Gracie (Gigi) John(Bum bum), and my sweet little Peach. Lilah was sitting on the floor propped up against the couch and sliding down onto the floof , she was trying to upright herself
with no luck. She wasn't her bright shining self as she was exhausted by all the Christmas festivities. When Lilah is tired she doesn't engage easily so my usual "squeeze the baby" failed to amuse her. Even when she is exhausted my Peach doesn't fuss or whine , she just kind of goes away. Yesterdays visit made me a little sad ,struggling to keep herself upright was a battle she wasn't winning. I am going over there later and I hope my little princess is having a happy day. Here's hoping..

Special people, special needs

This is Lilah my niece ,she is the inspiration for this blog. She was born with a chromosomal anomaly that affects her growth and development . She is 2 now and is just now starting to sit herself up, she doesn't talk  but her personality lights up the whole room  and her laugh is my favorite sound in this whole world.

I want this blog to honor Lilah and kids like her. I want people to know that special needs kids are a special gift from God and the joy they bring is immeasurable. Lilah faces her struggles with grace and is an inspiration to everyone around her .

This blog will , I hope, foster understanding and acceptance of these special little people .
